What Can Physiotherapy do?

A physiotherapist will examine and question you carefully, take a complete history, and conduct appropriate diagnostic tests. He will focus what symptoms you've been suffering from and determine which parts of your spine and other structures are the likely cause of your pain and loss of function.

A physiotherapist has special training and experience needed to safely and effectively treat your spine, so that the stress on the discs and related areas is minimised, the pain relieved, the damaged or displaced structure given a chance to heal and your ability to return to normal functioning restored.

Our aims are to reduce pain and recurrences by improving your understanding of your condition. A thorough assessment is used to ascertain movement dysfunction.

This includes examination of movement patterns, muscle length & strength, as well as quality of muscle activation. Palpation of soft tissue is used to reveal the precise nature of any tightness.

Further, diagnostic procedures include assessment of joint function including - joint range of movements measurement by the use of an "inclinometer and protractor" and its finding detailed on a (highlighted) body diagram (copy to patient).

Our other aim is:

  1. Restore flexibility muscular strength, muscular imbalance and control (i.e. proprioception)
  2. To improve wellbeing through gentle mobilisation, manual therapy (eg: hold/relax stretches), muscle energy techniques and manipulation as indicated
  3. To quickly reduce swelling (oedema), and inflammation of affected areas by the use of electro-medical modalities.
